My Maternal Grandfather

My maternal grandfather was an incredibly gifted man, and as a child, I loved to watch him paint. He made a lot of copies of Dutch flower paintings and spent a great deal of time restoring and painting Chippendale furniture. He was much in demand for his work. I stayed with him and my grandmother as a child, and I would sit for hours with my grandfather while he worked. He also trusted me to apply the gold leaf onto the little Chinese figures he so easily painted onto the Chippendale furniture. In the evenings, we would sit in their parlour, which had 2 enormous Hookah Pipes on either side of the fireplace and play cards. No TV ,radio, or internet, but I was never bored!

As long as I can remember, my grandfather always wore a bow tie and smoked cigars. As children, we thought he was very exotic, and owning a parrot also greatly added to his charm and mystique.

This is a painting he did of my mother. It hung at the top of the stairs in our house, and I always loved it.

This is his bedroom where he slept and worked.

Like every true artist, he loved to sketch.
